Equestria government and military
The Governance and Military of Equestria
Back in Equestria, the third part of the triad in government was the courts, which balanced out the power of the Princesses. This is how the system was designed: the Princesses provided the leadership to make informed choices, while the Council of Lords helped run the day-to-day operations of Equestria and kept the Princesses informed about the lives of the people.
The Prime Minister served as the main advisor to the Princesses, managing domestic affairs and providing essential information on internal matters. While the Princesses could bring legislation to the Council, they also served as the deciding vote if the Council reached a deadlock.
The courts, in more detail, acted as a check on the power of both the Princesses and the Council of Lords. Although the Princesses held ultimate authority over Equestria's direction in state affairs, the nobility—consisting of those with high station—often served as advisors or were simply wealthy ponies who threw lavish parties. They used to hold a great deal of power until Princess Celestia ensured they no longer had as much influence as they once did. While they can still affect things on a smaller scale, they can no longer start wars as they used to.
There were incidents where the nobility almost dragged Equestria into wars, leading Celestia and Luna to pass resolutions creating the Council of Lords and the courts. Once the Council of Friendship was fully formed, it was designed to fix friendship problems while also informing the Princesses on matters of harmony.
The fourth part of the government is the military, where the Wonderbolts and the Royal Guard stand. The Wonderbolts are Equestria's air force and are under a separate command structure than that of the Royal Guards, both answering directly to the Princesses as they are the only ones who can command them both. The Royal Guards both maintain the security of Equestria's borders and are assigned to protect the Princesses. At its head is the Guard Captain; think of a pyramid structure within pyramids regarding how command is within the Guards. The Night Guards fall into the same structure and are part of the Guards for Princess Luna's court, maintaining order.
Another part of the Guards is the Defense Force and the Navy. The Defense Force maintains border security and is often the closest thing to a police force within border towns, where they often do patrols. The Equestrian Navy patrols the coastlines of Equestria and its waterways, enforcing the laws; I guess it is closer to that of a Coast Guard, but often fulfills both roles as a Coast Guard and a deep-water navy.
Now, onto the Wonderbolts: their command structure is similar to the Guards. There is also another part of the Wonderbolts: they also command Equestria's Air Navy. At the top of the Wonderbolts, you have the Captain of the Wonderbolts; below them, you have a number of commanders who answer directly to them, and so on and so forth. The Wonderbolts, the main air team, is often used as a stunt team, but it has other duties, such as patrols and generally helping out wherever they are directed, like search and rescue among many things.
The Air Navy patrols the skies, enforcing laws and chasing down pirates. The commander in charge reports directly to Spitfire. They maintain a fairly large group of frigates that are well-armed for their size, with the main port being built within the mountain near Canterlot Castle. There are a few other ports built within mountainsides for resupply.
The third wheel of the military is the Logistics Branch, with its own commander and power structure. Their goals are to supply the many bases, border outposts, and naval ports with the supplies they need to keep functioning. They control a huge number of airships, trains, and deep-water ships in order to make sure these places have what they need to keep functioning.
Finally, there is a Central Command, where the three branches come together. This is a council of sorts between the captains of the three services where they can coordinate with one another. This allows the Guard Captain, the Captain of the Wonderbolts, and the Logistics Commander to synchronize their efforts, ensuring the entire military machine moves as one under the direction of the Princesses.
